ABOUT TONY
Tony Smith is a proud native son of Plant City, shaped by the roots he planted in our local public schools—from Burney Elementary to Plant City High. His early love for music flourished through the youth gospel group, The Happy Stars, where he learned to share his faith in God and build lasting connections throughout the community.
By eighth grade, Tony’s determination to play sports ran up against his mother’s strict religious objections. Thinking quickly, he made a deal to play in the band and join the chorus if he could play sports. He know his mother would cave at anything musical.His grit paid off. Tony quickly emerged as a leader on every team he joined, earning a reputation as a hardworking hometown standout.
His talent earned him a full scholarship to Clark Atlanta University, where he excelled in music, track, and football. After college, Tony built a successful career in retail management, developing expertise in leadership, budgeting, and business operations. But in 2006, he answered a higher calling to become a firefighter. He joined the Tampa Fire Department in 2008 and, following his retirement, continued serving others as an EMT educator with Hillsborough County Public Schools.
In 2018, Tony founded M.A.T.E.S., a community wellness initiative promoting fitness, nutrition, and mental health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, M.A.T.E.S., working alongside local partners, helped provide healthy food and critical support to hundreds of families throughout the city.
Today, Tony continues serving his hometown as a member of the City of Plant City Board of Adjustment where he has been reappointed for another term and serves as the Vice Chair. He is also co-founder of Better Together Plant City, a company created to inform, advocate, educate the community and partner with small businesses in the city. Tony serves as Vice Chair on the Board of Directors for Plant City Trash Bash, a local organization that picks up trash throughout eastern Hillsborough County. Tony’s life has been defined by service—as a firefighter, educator, mentor, community leader, and advocate for working families.
Now, Tony is answering another call to serve by running for Florida State Representative, District 68.
Policy Platform
Tony believes District 68 deserves a representative who puts people before politics and delivers practical solutions that strengthen our communities.
His campaign is focused on four priorities:
● Protecting affordability by lowering costs for working families and supporting small businesses.
● Keeping our communities safe by supporting first responders, investing in crime prevention, and standing behind law enforcement and firefighters.
● Managing responsible growth by ensuring development is matched with the roads, schools, utilities, and infrastructure our communities need before approving new expansion.
● Building stronger infrastructure by improving transportation, addressing flooding concerns, and preparing District 68 for a prosperous future.
Tony Smith isn’t running to build a political career—he’s running to continue a lifetime of service. With proven leadership, deep community roots, and a servant’s heart, he is ready to be a strong voice for the families of District 68 in Tallahassee.
